What is GPA?

  • GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It is a grading scale to evaluate academic performance of students in high school and colleges in United States :

  • The most common GPA is Standard GPA or Standard 4.0 GPA, which is calculated on a scale of 1.0 to 4.0 where 4.0 is the best and F is lowest with 1.0 point. Some countries use a 10 point scale.

  • Beside Standard GPA, there is Honors GPA where A is 4.5 and Advanced Placement GPA or AP where A is 5.0

  • A CGPA or Cumulative GPA is the average GPA across various terms and semesters.
Cumulative GPA = (Sum of individual grading points) / Sum of All Credits or Sum of all Term GPA / Number of Terms / Semester

  • In addition, there is an 'Overall GPA' which includes GPA from other institutes , transfers. Cumulative GPA only considers GPA of multiple terms and semesters from same school / college and not collated from multiple other institutes

Formula to calculate GPA

GPA Formula icon

GPA Formula

GPA = Total Number of Grade Points / Total Credits

Grade Points

Total Number of Grade Points = Sum of Individual Grade Points of each course

Grade Points of a course = Credits (no of hours) * Grade Point Scored

Grade Point is 4.0 for A, 1.0 for F in non weighted grading scale Grade Point can range from 10.0 to 1.0 in other systems of grading.

Cumulative Grade Point

Cumulative Grade Point = Sum of (GPA Of Each Semester * Total Credit Hours of the Semester)/ (Total Credits of all Semesters)

Frequently Asked Questions on GPA Calculator

FAQ icon

  • Unweighed GPA uses the standard GPA scale where A is 4.0 points.
It does not take into account the complexity of the course/subject.
A weighted GPA has different grading points for Honors and Advanced Placement level and higher points for difficult subjects where A is 5 points.
It is also known as 5.0 gpa scale

  • A high score is good in both. However higher weighted GPA is best as it gives measure of performance with complexity and a higher grade which is weighted has more merit.

  • Find the grade corresponding to the unweighted GPA. for eg. 4.0 unweighted is 'A'.
In weighted , A corresponds to either 4.3 or 5.0 GPA depending on if it's honors or advanced placement

  • Find the grade for the weighted GPA and map it to the corresponding unweighted grading point
for eg, 3.8 corresponds to B+ which is 3.3 in the unweighted scale.

  • a. Standard Grading (A = 4.0)
    b. Honors Grading (A = 4.5)
    c. Advanced Placement Grading (A = 5)

  • 7.0 to 10.00 is A (4.0)
    5.0 to 6.9 is B
    3,3 to 4.9 is C
    1.0 to 3.2 is F (1.0)

  • Cum Laude Honor starts with Average GPA of 3.5 or higher.
It's a latin term to honor / recognize the top students.
cum laude (GPA of 3.5–3.64); (top 25%)
magna cum laude (GPA of 3.65–3.79) (top 10-15%)
summa cum laude (GPA of 3.8–4.0) (top 5%)
